Sonic the Hedgehog a franchise named after the titular character, which made Sega a household name throughout the early 90's and provided them with a respectable mascot to go toe-to-toe with Mario during the 16-bit console wars. While their rivalry was under-played during the lifespan of the Sega Saturn and the Sega Dreamcast, Sonic the Hedgehog remains a significant character in the video game industry, and continues to be Sega's leading mascot.
